Control e4, build on f5 — flexible and rich in ideas
The main line
1.d4 f5 2.c4 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 O-O 6.O-O d6 7.Nc3 Qe8 8.Re1 Qg6 9.e4 fxe4
Strategic ideas
- Control the e4 square with f5 supported by pieces
- Build a solid structure with …d5, …c6, …Nf6, and …Be7
- Expand on the kingside with …g5–g4 at the right moment
- Use the …Ne4 outpost as a powerful centralising idea
- Target White's queenside expansion with timely …c5 breaks
Key themes
- Positional — Black builds a compact structure and improves piece by piece before committing to an attack
- Piece Activity — The Ne4 outpost and active rook placement are central to Black's middlegame strategy
- Space — The f5 pawn claims kingside space and restricts White's e4 advance throughout the game
Typical plans
Black builds a solid structure with …d5, …c6, …Nf6, …Be7, and castles kingside. The main idea is to control e4 and eventually launch a kingside expansion with …g5–g4 when White's pieces are committed elsewhere. White typically counters with queenside expansion via c4–c5 or a central break with e4, so Black must react flexibly.
Move by move
- d4 — White claims central space.
- f5 — Black stakes a claim on e4 immediately — the Dutch's defining move.
- c4 — White expands further, aiming for a big centre.
- Nf6 — Black develops, adding another defender and controller of e4.
- g3 — White prepares a kingside fianchetto for long-term pressure on the long diagonal.
- e6 — Black opens the way for the f8-bishop and keeps the structure solid before committing to a Stonewall or Leningrad setup.
- Bg2 — White completes the fianchetto, aiming the bishop at the queenside and centre.
- Be7 — Black develops modestly, prioritising king safety over piece activity for now.
- Nf3 — White finishes minor-piece development ahead of castling.
- O-O — Black castles into safety, ready to expand with …d5, …c6, and eventually a kingside pawn storm.
- O-O — White castles into safety before deciding on a central plan.
- d6 — Black keeps the structure flexible, preparing …Qe8 rather than committing to …d5 immediately.
- Nc3 — White develops the last minor piece, eyeing the e4 break.
- Qe8 — Black regroups the queen toward the kingside, the classic Ilyin-Zhenevsky manoeuvre aiming for …Qh5 or …Qg6.
- Re1 — White prepares to contest the centre with e4, adding a rook to the soon-to-open e-file.
- Qg6 — Black completes the queen's march to g6, adding weight to a coming kingside attack.
- e4 — White strikes in the centre, challenging Black's f5 pawn and the e4 outpost.
- fxe4 — Black captures, following through on the central battle rather than allowing White a free e4 push.
