Strategic ideas

Key themes

Typical plans

Black fianchettoes on g7 and develops with …Nf6, …d6, and …0-0, building a compact but dynamic structure. The main plans involve preparing …e5 to challenge White's centre or launching a direct kingside advance with …g5–g4. The Leningrad is considerably sharper and more dynamic than the Classical or Stonewall systems and rewards aggressive, concrete play.
